Platform solution for fish farms In cooperation with NIKOFARM , SINN Power brings renewable energy to where it is needed directly: on and around the water surfaces of modern aquaculture. At NIKOFARM’s site on Evia, Greece , SINN Power is deploying a platform solution that builds on experience and technological approaches from the SOcean platform. It combines solar and wind energy with technical infrastructure on the water, reduces CO₂ emissions, and supports the transition toward more climate-friendly fish production. Technical overview SOcean platform The challenges in aquaculture Dependence on fossil energy Many aquaculture operations require continuous electricity for feeding, pumps, cooling, aeration, and monitoring. When this demand is met by diesel generators or external energy sources, it leads to additional CO₂ emissions and high operating costs. Feed loss and water pollution During manual feeding, unused feed can enter the water and settle on the seabed. This impacts water quality, can harm local ecosystems, and increases the need for monitoring during operations. Feed as the largest cost factor Feed can account for up to 70% of operating costs in aquaculture. Any feed loss therefore not only represents an environmental burden, but also leads to direct economic losses for the operation. The Fishfarm Platform as a solution Reduced dependence on fossil energy The Platform generates renewable energy directly on-site from solar, wind, and wave power, thereby supporting a lower-CO₂ energy supply. Next step: From platform concept to aquaculture application From platform concept to aquaculture application With NIKOFARM as pilot operator and future user, SINN Power is preparing the next development step for integrated energy solutions in the aquaculture sector, together with the University of Patras and the Decentralized Administration of Thessaly and Central Greece. The operational requirements of the fish farm are directly incorporated into the development and testing process. The University of Patras supports monitoring and KPI validation, while the Decentralized Administration supports the involvement of relevant stakeholders and social acceptance. The focus is on transferring various SINN Power technologies to the real requirements of fish production – from electrical supply, monitoring and operational safety to infrastructure on the water, at the shore and on land. This creates a holistic approach: the platform can be used as a floating energy and support system on the water. In addition, near-shore SKipp applications can provide additional solar energy, while land-based PV systems on roofs or operational areas can support the energy demand on land. In combination with storage systems and suitable electrical infrastructure, different area potentials can be connected in a meaningful way. Until now, photovoltaic systems were hardly feasible in these areas, especially in areas around pumping stations, for reasons of drinking water protection. Thanks to our innovative SKipp technology, we can now offer you tailor-made solutions that meet the strict requirements in water protection zones II and III and at the same time generate renewable energy. In addition, our floating PV system SLake offers an effective way to efficiently use water surfaces at sewage treatment plants. This conserves valuable land resources and enables sensible dual use through sustainable electricity production. In view of the EU's new municipal wastewater directive, which stipulates mandatory energy neutrality, our systems are the ideal solution for future-oriented and environmentally conscious energy supply. Especially in view of the municipal wastewater directive recently adopted by the EU Parliament - with requirements for mandatory energy neutrality - the floating PV system SLake is a sensible solution. Approval procedure : Our technology has been proven to be approvable, so that purification ponds and treatment ponds can be fully used for the operation of floating photovoltaic systems - regardless of the otherwise usual requirements for artificial bodies of water under the Water Resources Act. Focus on nature conservation: Breeding platforms with access aids can be installed on each of the module blocks so that water birds can nest there and find protection from predators. The distance between the platform and the water surface is at least 50 cm so that water birds can swim under the facility. The entire facility was designed with environmental and nature conservation aspects in mind (e.g. use of drinking water-friendly materials). Pilot plant on the polishing ponds of the Ammersee sewage treatment plant in Eching: This is where the world's first floating photovoltaic system on polishing ponds is being built. Bavaria's Energy Minister Hubert Aiwanger gave the starting signal for this lighthouse project as part of the Bavarian Energy Days 2024 and launched the first of around 50 module blocks. SINN Power accompanied the project throughout the planning and approval phase and is also responsible for all procurement issues as well as the construction and grid connection.
